Welcome to the Harriet Klausner Appreciation Society !

JOINING THIS BLOG

Whoever wants to join this blog from amongst those not invited yet please give your working email address to scotdog, or barbara, or me (moderator098@yahoo.com). This can be any email address -- and you may want to create a throw-away one (we don't yet know whether this blog generates spam; it won't hurt to be careful).

Also, when doing this, please let us know who you are (unless it is clear from the address itself). I mean the nickname we know you by from Amazon comments. This nickname will NOT be shoved down your throat when you register: after you get an invitation email, you will set up your login data any way you want: it will all be up to you; the only thing the moderator does is send you an invitation.

If you're totally new to this, you're welcome to apply just as well. The rules here are pretty much anything goes with the exception of deliberate nonsense and spam.

Note: Please log in to post and comment.

Thanks for you hard work! Just a test to see if I figured it out.

It would help if I could spell. Can you add the "r" for me? I don't want to go down as the first Harriet blogger who has a typo. Hopefully it will soon be buried under 100's of comments. I guess I need to use the preview button!

You should be able to edit your post. I'll check...

This is going to be fun. Hello all, and welcome to the HKAS!

Turns out comments cannot be edited. Bummer! But they can be deleted though (and reposted, I suppose).

I don't want to delete. Then I wouldn't be #1!

Then you must leave it like it is. It's a shame that comments can't be edited, but that's how this site works, and well... we've got it all for free, so we can't be too picky. :-)

Maybe we'll find some other place where comments can be edited; then we'll be able to move over there. For now we'll live with what we've got, just use the preview and remember to keep a copy of everything you don't want to lose.

Oh yeah, scotdog: could you try to post a message, not just a comment?

M. Krysztofiak made his entrance! Congratulations!

So I see you chose to use the picture of the "old" Harriet Klausner, not the younger dark-haired photo she uses in some of her publicity. It reminds me of voting for the old Elvis/young Elvis postage stamp years ago. This particular photo reminds me a great deal of Maudie Frickert, the Jonathan Winters character.

I am assuming that we can discuss other miscreants in the echelons of the top reviewers and not just HK? I think some of the comments on Grady Harp's reviews have been particularly interesting lately. I've also been amused that some of Mr. Harp's closest friends have made some name changes. Evidently M.J. Leonard feels that by becoming Michael Leonard he will escape detection by Mr. Harp's critics. As M.J. he used to remind voters not to forget that his review was immediately following Grady's.

I had noticed the name Bill Bradley appear as one of Grady's friends also, his name is appearing on several of Grady Harp's friends pages as well. I wonder how much he is aware of the company he's keeping.

Have we come to a consensus regarding which books are permissible, regarding parodying Harriet Klausner's review "style?" I believe, in the interest of keeping true to the spirit of the enterprise, that we should limit our "reviews" to three paragraphs. Also, someone mentioned writing the reviews in an "anti-Harriet glowingly-negative" fashion. Not a bad idea, but perhaps we should first produce more familiar, "affirmative-sir" type reviews. We wouldn't want to produce feelings of negativity in the collective unconscious, now would we? Not quite yet, anyway. Got a rabbit and his b**** covering that particular dimension of responsibility already, now don't we?

Thoughts?

MK, yes it's time we start agreeing on the books and rules of this competition. We also need to get more "competitors" onto this blog and away from Amazon before they delete us.

I think the book suggestions were excellent.

The style should be the typical HK three paragraph.

Reviews must include typos and some storyline misrepresentation.

We have to choose a judge.

Misfit,

Hilarious suggestions, especially the "typos" bit. Nice.

Can we "assign" required pseudo-colloquialisms, mangled-idioms, or Klausnerisms that must be included in submitted reviews? Perhaps contestants ("Look at ALL these WONDERFUL pri...," sorry) can choose from a list of 50-100 frequently-seen Harriet misspellings, grammatical errors, or head-scratching approximations of colloquial English, and include 10 (or so) of them in their entry. That way, creativity could remain intact while being framed within a set of standards.

Thoughts?

Did anyone see Boudville's baker's dozen of reviews today? He has covered the globe, in a quite literal sense. Amazing as it may be that HK can zoom through half a dozen bodice rippers a day this man's reading is truly staggering.

I know nothing about the highly technical books he reviews, but he also reviews many books of a geo-political nature. The thought of someone reading one of these books in less than a day, knowing and retaining what they read, and writing an in-depth, helpful review is well beyond my capacity to suspend disbelief.

I also noticed that JJJS's comments had almost all been removed from Boudville's reviews. Amazon moderators have been busy. Somehow I don't think they are the brightest, most discerning people in the world. They removed one comment of mine because I said HK was crepuscular. What do you suppose they thought it meant?

Malleus said...

Yup, they are busy removing my -- I'm not sure what (dont' remember) -- but probably daily Boudville statistics. The new WBoud. dump is mind boggling. I wonder why he changed his strategy from a bit every day to a major unload more rarely.

But of course! I hope we do. At least you can say anything you want here and nothing will get removed by Amazon.
